The Bay Area is the second-largest oil refining center on the West Coast and home to five refineries. Four of these are in Contra Costa County. Scientist Greg Karras and refinery town residents and activists will explore the local and global impacts in this invaluable Refinery 101 presentation.

What is the effect of oil refining on public health?   On climate change?  How much petroleum refining will we still need going forward?  How can California actually reach its climate goals?  This will be a lively presentation with plenty of time for your questions!

The panel will be moderated by Shoshana Wechsler, a long-standing organizer with 350 Bay Area and the Sunflower Alliance.

Panelists are:

  • Greg Karras, former Senior Scientist with Communities for a Better Environment, and renowned expert on California refineries.
  • Maureen Brennan, Rodeo resident, and member of the Phillips 66 Fenceline Working Group.
  • Ratha Lai, Richmond resident, and Environmental Justice activist/organizer, currently with Critical Impact Consulting.
